Another busy week is on the cards at Horsham U3A! Whether you’re after some gentle exercise, a creative outlet, a good card game, or a chance to learn something new, there’s a spot for you on this week’s schedule. Here’s everything happening from Monday 24 to Friday 28 August.
Monday: Local HIstory
This month’s Local History session turns its focus to the First Fleet and the families who trace their ancestry back to those very first ships. It’s a fascinating reminder of how far-reaching that piece of history is — with descendants having gone on to settle right here in the Wimmera. Our presenter has been digging into the local connections, so if you’ve ever wondered whether your own family tree links back that far, or you simply enjoy a good history deep-dive, this is one not to miss.

Tuesday: German Conversation
Fancy dusting off your Deutsch? Tuesday’s German Conversation group is a relaxed, friendly session for anyone keen to practise speaking, pick up new vocabulary, or simply enjoy a chat auf Deutsch with fellow learners. Fun fact for the group: one of Germany’s most beloved “viral” traditions is Dinner for One — an 18-minute British comedy sketch that’s been broadcast every New Year’s Eve in Germany since the 1970s, and is so iconic that most Germans can recite the butler’s line “the same procedure as every year” by heart. It’s performed in English with a short German introduction, so it’s a lovely bit of shared culture to bring along and chat about this week.
10am | Main room
Wednesday: Grumpy old wrinklies
Fancy a good natter, a few laughs, and the chance to (unofficially) solve all the world’s problems over a cuppa? Grumpy Old Wrinklies is exactly that — a light-hearted, no-agenda catch-up where members swap yarns, air their opinions, and put the world to rights together. All are welcome to come along for a chat and see what the fuss (and the fun) is all about.
1.30pm | west wing
Thursday: Scrabble
Love a good word puzzle? Thursday afternoon’s Scrabble group is a great mix of friendly competition and mental workout, as members go head-to-head hunting for triple word scores and sneaky little two-letter plays. Whether you’re a seasoned wordsmith or just enjoy a casual game, all skill levels are welcome to pull up a chair and join in.
1.30pm | Main room
Friday: Knitting & Crochet
Bring your needles, hooks, and yarn stash along on Friday afternoon for a cosy, social session of knitting and crochet. Whether you’re working on your own project or after a bit of inspiration for something new, all levels are welcome — and there’s always a friendly hand nearby if you get stuck on a stitch. Looking for a simple project to start? This collection of free beginner knitting patterns has some lovely easy options to bring along and try.
1.30pm | waiting room
As always, new members and visitors are welcome to come along and see what our groups are all about. Get in touch with Horsham U3A for more details on any of the sessions above, including venue locations and how to get involved.
Please note: Sounds of Music will not be running this Thursday 27 August.
